After years in the construction industry, Dave Conway followed his closet passion and started selling personal development.
What’s your story?
I spent over a decade in the construction industry as a general contractor and home builder. We specialised in home and light commercial construction. I was a closet personal development student and I never shared that part of my life with anyone; I preferred to keep to myself. After 13 years in construction, I lost my passion for the work, this feeling persisted for 2.5 more years until I saw an opportunity to get licensed to facilitate my icons programs. I had found my true purpose in life.
What excites you most about your industry?
I am in the sales and personal development industry. There are many things that excite me about my industry. From how technology is affecting the delivery of information and service.; that you can move into the international market and are free from the borders of the economy you live in.
What drives you in business to push beyond what other people consider normal?
My clients. I had a client say to me recently “Dave, I will continue to hire you as long as I see you growing”. I am in the personal development industry which is not for the weak, if someone wants to truly succeed. There is no rest in my industry if a person desires to reach higher levels of achievement. This is not unique to the personal development industry but the fact remains if you want to move to the top or stay at the top you must continue to push the limits both personally and professionally.
What have been the most useful skills you have learnt and applied in your journey?
Selling. My influence has only grown to my ability to sell. My business cannot outperform its ability to sell what we offer. I also love selling as it allows me to bootstrap my business without any debt or loans. This is a liberating feeling. Since I developed this skill I now always have a way to acquire the money I need to create what I want. It has been the primary catalyst for my business and career growth to this day.
What’s the best piece of advice you ever received?
I received a text from my boss at the time, Bob Proctor. “Dave, if you just focus on becoming better every day you will have a brilliant future. Ask for nothing and give all you have got. That is what I have always done and I have never stopped winning. You GOT what it takes”.
This message I carry with me to this day. Bob Proctor is one of the worlds leading authorities on mindset. To this day this advice still pays huge dividends.
Who inspires you?
This is a great question. A lot of people inspire me. My clients inspire me. Some have come from absolutely nothing with every reason not to win to achieving extremely rare results.
Three known people that inspire me are Bob Proctor because at age 87 he is still going like a rocket. Christiano Ronaldo at 36 is still world-class and performing at the highest levels. Warren Buffet, not because of the money, but the integrity and longevity. I am inspired by anyone that has stuck to their craft and is still in the game while most fall off. Longevity inspires me.
What have you learnt recently that blew you away?
A deepening of my understanding of DECISION MAKING. How much power it has in our lives. That our life is the culmination of the thought and decisions we have made till this point in time. Personally, I was not in control of decision-making until recently. I had all these motives and reasons unknown to me that control my every move.
The word decision is vital to grasp if you are in sales. Because the great question is: How do we get more people to experience our product and service?
I studied decision for 18 months everyday.
If you had your time again, what would you do differently?
If I could go back in time and know what I know now I would get myself in higher-performing environments. Environments with higher standards. The key is the environment we receive our information from. If I could get my time back I would have consciously put myself in higher-performing environments.
I believe that if all a person did was get themselves into higher and higher environments their lives would be beyond the scope of their imagination because we absorb our environments. The easiest way I know how to win is changing enviroments.
How do you unwind?
I love games. Any kind of game, you name it, I am game to play. Board games, video games, sports games, card games, escape rooms. I also love hanging out with my wife. We have two young daughters and for us to get some time alone is honestly the greatest feeling. She is my favorite person to spend time with.
What is a major mindset change, belief shift or ‘ah ha’ moment that you’ve experienced in relation to your business?
I am responsible for it. When I was in construction there were so many variables I had no control over that could negatively affect a project. Because of this I would find myself always blaming some circumstance or situation for the results of the business.
When I learned to take full responsibility for all my results it changed my business. Leadership mindset!
Everyone in business should read this book:
Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. It’s a fascinating book as it has nothing to do with strategy. A study of the 500 wealthiest people in America at the time and not a wiff of strategy. All mindset. That must have been an amazing realization Mr. Hill would have had during his 20 years of research that went into the book.
