Dhara’s Passion is Designing Bold Jewellery and Clutches
What’s your story?
I am an Indian from AamchiMumbai (translates to “My Mumbai”) with lots of dreams, creativity and expressive passion..
My career path unfolded over time, from being a teenager dreaming of becoming a dancer, to realising the dream of being a creative jewellery designer, to heading the product development team of a global jewellery manufacturing house, to being a wonderful wife, a crazy mother and now an independent entrepreneur. This journey has been fulfilling and beautiful. Every stage has taught me to take on new challenges and to move forward.
I founded Kasido.HK when I moved to Hong Kong a few years back. The brand derives from the word “Kashida” which is an oldest form of embroidery from Gujarat India.
Our products can be described in two words – colors and fun. We create bold jewellery and clutches, combining a variety of raw materials from all over the world. And yes – we try to ensure that each product is one of a kind, and accessible, at a very affordable price point.
What excites you most about your industry?
My clients come from all over the world, from all walks of life, and are all ages, from 5 to 95 years old. It is challenging to create products that cater to such a large range of customers, but worth the effort when I see their smiling faces in pictures they send to me, wearing our products.
It also excites me to see smiles on the faces of my hard working artisans when I tell them I have a big order for them, knowing that our working relationship helps sustain their small village in India. I am actually filled with joy when I receive a delivery from them, wrapped in our sustainable packaging.
What’s your connection to Asia?
I think I was meant to be born in India. I love everything about my country, the culture, the food, Bollywood, classical Indian forms, whether it is music, dance or art. I am inspired by India’s history, the beautiful architectural monuments, temples, palaces and so much more. Every state has its own unique style of dressing, food, beliefs, language and geography. This makes my country unique.
Favourite city in Asia for business and why?
Hong Kong, of course. The city has given me a platform to showcase our work to the global community. Getting things done in Hong Kong is very easy, and that’s important in the early stages of any business.
What’s the best piece of advice you ever received?
The best advice is more of a quote that comes to mind, ”Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” — Confucius
Who inspires you?
My parents, who taught me to “be a humble human being.”
My sister taught me to “be a giver, and spread love.“
My husband told me to “be your true self.“
My daughter taught me to “be carefree.”
My Nanny taught me to “smile no matter what situation you are in.”
Iris Apfel told me, “you have just this one trip, and you have to try it.”
I am inspired every day when I reflect on the advice of these inspiring people..
What have you just learnt recently that blew you away?
I learnt recently that I could act. It’s a funny story. I actually went to this audition with Teacup Productions for a small dancing part. Somehow, I got selected to play the role of an 80-year old lady. It took months of effort – multiple rehearsals, learning lines, and mental preparation.This, along with managing my daughter’s schedule and, of course, running Kasido.HK.
The effort did pay off! I received a good response from the audience, and I didn’t forget any of my lines!! What this experience taught me is that sometimes life just gives you the most random opportunities, and you have to take them!
If you had your time again, what would you do differently?
Honestly, I would want to relive this life again. I still have many more years to keep trying new things to excel in. My previous forty years have made me a better person, and I don’t think I have wasted any time, so far.
How do you unwind?
Painting, dancing, singing, writing poems, and acting like a kid with my daughter.
Favourite Asian destination for relaxation? Why?
It would be Koh Samui in Thailand. This place has several wonderful memories for me.
