What’s your story?
I wasted the first 30 years of my life. By all accounts, I was a loser. However, at age 30, I made several intense, life-changing choices that set me on a new path in life. I went back to college and earned a Bachelors degree. I picked up a camera for the first time, and I immediately fell in love with photography, videography, and social media. 10 years later, I own a YouTube channel (DoMoreLife), and operate on various media platforms.
What excites you most about your industry?
The media industry is evolving faster than ever! Technology has been created, which we use in social media, that can be applied in various aspects of life. The media industry is driving technological innovation such as, crypto, cameras, smart phones, and communication. I love getting to use the newest technological advances to contribute to a social industry which brings so much hope and inspiration to others!
What drives you in business to push beyond what other people consider normal?
I don’t believe in “normal,” nor do I believe in the value of other people’s opinions of “normal.” I only compete with myself. No one will ever be more critical of myself than me. Therefore, competing against myself consistently forces me to push far beyond the “normalcy” set by society. I push myself beyond societal norms to keep up with the ever-changing landscape of technology and innovation.
What have been the most useful skills you have learnt and applied in your journey?
First, I had to become self aware of who I really am. Next, I became less interested in people’s opinion of me because I was confident when I looked in the mirror. Also, I learned that you cannot fail unless you quit. Failure is merely a teaching opportunity to adjust the direction of your sails. Finally, there are two kinds of people in this world; those who teach you what you need to do, and those who teach you what not to do. Learn from both!
What’s the best piece of advice you ever received?
“If nothing changes, nothing will change.” This means I have to constantly challenge myself to live outside of my comfort zone. I have to monitor my environment at all times. Monitoring my environment consist of choosing the people I spend most of my time with. If you want to be successful, hang around successful people. Changing my group of friends was hard but necessary for my personal growth and change.
Who inspires you?
My father. My dad was a hard working man his entire life. He worked to provide us with a lower-middle class lifestyle for many years. I grew up fairly poor; however, my father made sure we always had a roof over our head, food to eat, and clothes to wear. After decades of 50 and 60 hour work weeks, he recently retired. Still not living off of much money, he has accomplished his dream of traveling America in his RV. I am so proud of him because he always played for the end-game result.
What have you learnt recently that blew you away?
We are all products of our environment. Recently, I learned that my character will become the average character of the five people I spend the most time with. This means I need a healthy social environment at all times. Becoming a product of a positive, successful environment means I have to put myself in that environment. We truly are products of our environment. If you don’t believe me, go stand in a dumpster. Eventually, you will start to smell like garbage.
If you had your time again, what would you do differently? : Very little. I have made many mistakes in my life, and I will make more. However, those mistakes have turned me into the proud, confident man I am today. The one thing I would change is my ability to be more open minded at a younger age. It would have been nice to start investing in myself when I was 20 rather than 30.
How do you unwind?
I unwind by unplugging from the outside world. I am fortunate enough to live in Thailand, where unplugging is just a beach away. Put me on one of Thailand’s beautiful beaches or islands, and I can withdraw myself from the day to day hustle.
What is a major mindset change, belief shift or ‘ah ha’ moment that you’ve experienced in relation to your business?
My “ah ha” moment came when I released my first viral video. It proved to me that I am capable of greatness. I am capable of success. I am capable of winning. This moment changed my life forever because I no longer heard all the background noise of people telling me, “You can’t do it,” and “You will never be successful.”
