Wayne Mullins has taken his belief that marketing is about influence, not budget size and turned it into a Marketing business.
What’s your story?
I’m a husband, father of 4, founder, CEO, entrepreneur and author. Over the past 20 years, I’ve scaled multiple companies and helped hundreds of entrepreneurs do the same. I influence more than 250,000 entrepreneurs annually and have personally worked with clients in over 100 industries – from every corner of the globe. My background is in corporate advertising and sales. When I saw the profits I was making for my company, I decided I would be much more successful doing what I was doing for myself. Now I’m leading Ugly Mug Marketing where I can make my biggest impact.
What excites you most about your industry?
The re-humanization of marketing. Marketing is about influence, and the most powerful form of influence is truly understanding your audience in an intimate way. This revolution is already taking place, and it’s beautiful because it gives the “little guy” a chance. Far too long have the companies with the BIGGEST budgets been able to win the marketing game. In the future, the companies with the best relationships with the customers will win.
What drives you in business to push beyond what other people consider normal?
Making evangelists out of customers. You have to build relationships beyond the normal buy/sell you think of when you think about business, and really get to know your customers. Learning about the people we serve and genuinely caring for them is so integral to growing your business, and it’s something I am passionate about.
What have been the most useful skills you have learnt and applied in your journey?
Marketing isn’t about the numbers of likes, or clicks you get. It’s about results. It’s better to build something effective than something pretty that doesn’t grow your business (hence Ugly Mug Marketing’s name). It’s a core piece of how we function at UMM. We are focused on our clients’ results first and foremost.
What’s the best piece of advice you ever received?
Good advice applied at the wrong time is bad advice.
Who inspires you?
My wife and kids. They inspire me to be a better version of myself each and every day.
What have you learnt recently that blew you away?
That behavior always follows identity. If you want to change your behavior, start by changing your identity. This has profound implications for both our personal lives as well as marketing.
If you had your time again, what would you do differently?
Take bigger chances.
How do you unwind?
Motorcycle riding, off-roading, and reading.
What is a major mindset change, belief shift or ‘ah ha’ moment that you’ve experienced in relation to your business?
As a leader and entrepreneur, you can change what your focus is. You aren’t just stuck in one role for the end of time. You just have to be clear about what role you serve or want to serve.
