HSINCHU, Sept. 15, 2014 – Aiming to reach the next billion people, MediaTek and Google are working together on Android One™, an initiative to provide a family of high-quality and affordably priced Android devices for consumers in emerging markets. With Android One, which launched today, Google is working closely with partners to make it easier and faster to manufacture Android smartphones for the rising Super-mid market — a new market segment comprising an unprecedented volume of premium mid-range smart devices.

“MediaTek has long been an advocate of providing high-quality devices at reasonable prices, and our all-inclusive product road map stands as a strong proof point of that commitment,” said Mohit Bhushan, Vice President of U.S. Business Development at MediaTek. “By collaborating extensively with Google on Android One, we are enabling a total solution that encompasses hardware, software and testing, for manufacturers and brands globally. This initiative is directly in line with MediaTek’s vision to democratize high-quality technology — to allow anyone to achieve their limitless potential and become, what we like to call, an Everyday Genius.”

The first set of Android One devices features MediaTek’s MT6582® Mobile System-on-Chip (Mobile SoC) based on quad ARM Cortex™ A7 processors. The processors are managed by MediaTek’s CorePilot technology, an advanced scheduler algorithm with adaptive thermal and interactive power management that delivers superior multi-tasking performance and excellent sustained performance-per-watt for a premium mobile experience. Also inherent in the MT6582® is integrated multimedia hardware (audio, video, graphics and camera) as well as UMTS Release 8 modem capabilities.

“Google is pleased to partner with MediaTek on the Android One initiative. MediaTek has the expertise to provide what is needed for Android One devices and insights into the needs of consumers in emerging markets,” saidCaesar Sengupta, VP of Product Management at Google. “Together with an ecosystem of partners, including MediaTek, we’re building a future where high-quality smartphones are accessible to mainstream consumers at affordable prices. This work together will also allow our partners to pool resources to bring these great phones to market faster.”

The first set of Android One smartphones based on MediaTek’s MT6582 is being introduced today in India by leading brand partners Karbonn, Micromax and Spice.
