Keeping a healthy mind, body and soul is what inspired this woman to set up her successful fitness and nutrition business.

What’s your story?
I’m an an Australian, Certified Personal Trainer and International Figure Athlete.  I have been living in Singapore with my husband and three kids for the last 13 years.  Recently named one of Singapore’s superstar trainers,  I bring over eighteen years combined professional and competitive experience to my role and specialise in body transformations. I deliver fitness and nutrition programs in an exclusive transformation package through my company, BeachFit.

What excites you most about your industry?
As fitness professionals we can literally change lives.  It seems that many executives in the over 40’s age group are happy to accept their poor health states and think medication is a normal part of aging. Through education, fitness training, nutrition and supportive relationships we can help people make dramatic positive changes to their health.  A clear mind and energetic body can do outstanding things to work performance, self esteem and personal relationships. It’s like the best kept secret of our industry and so, so powerful.

What’s your connection to Asia?
I moved here as a trailing spouse, created a family of five, went back to University and built an exclusive, thriving business.

Favourite city in Asia for business and why?
Hands down, it would have to be Singapore.  The ease of starting up a company and the encouragement behind entrepreneurship is fantastic.  Legislation is tightening things up a bit now but the tax advantages are still highly attractive and the economy has been relatively buoyant for the 13 years I have lived here.  In terms of clients, higher earnings make it one of the best cities to earn some serious dough as a reward for delivering a superior service.

What’s the best piece of advice you ever received?
“Niche, niche, niche”.  Cut out the competition by being so niche your company is the only one of it’s kind. The Singapore fitness and nutrition market is super saturated right now and to battle the competition is often tiring and counter productive.  Offering an exclusive service is definitely the way to go and then the perception is that only my business has it covered…that my service is the ONLY one for them.

Who inspires you?
My clients!  Meeting them a few times a week means we develop a pretty strong relationship. Living through their challenges and wins each week is one of the best feelings in the world.  Working together to reach a health goal they never imagined possible and seeing the dedication and bloody hard work they put in is what gets me out of bed every day.  It keeps pushing me to deliver my absolute best in programming, support and education, just for them…..every single time.

What have you just learnt recently that blew you away?
In the United States, someone has a heart attack every 34 seconds and every 60 seconds, someone dies from a heart disease-related event.
Now, if that’s not a good reason to tidy up your act, what is?

If you had your time again, what would you do differently?
My answer might lack creativity but seriously, I wouldn’t do anything differently.  Even the ‘bad’ parts of life have presented so much opportunity for me.  Without thyroid cancer at 30 I likely would never have made the lifestyle changes I did and never have realised my dream to be a Figure Athlete. And without the move to Singapore away from friends and family I likely would never have made the brave choice to change careers and follow my passion.  The three kids, soul mate and happy life in Singapore all add to that story. I wouldn’t change a thing.

How do you unwind?
6 days a week my happy place is the gym.  Many a powerful workout has been fuelled by stress. Post workout endorphins are the best relaxant around and quite addictive!  I work most Saturdays so my Sundays are precious time to catch up with my husband, kids and Wiggles (the bulldog). Often my husband and I will jog/bike the East Coast with them or spend a morning on the sidelines cheering on our boys, if it’s rugby season.  Sunday night is ‘cheat night’ so we always cook up a bit of a storm if we haven’t been out with mates on Saturday night.

Favourite Asian destination for relaxation? Why?
Every quarter I have to get out of Singapore to disconnect and unwind.  I love our short breaks and we will often jet off to Bali or Thailand.  We always stay luxe to be totally pampered.  You only live once!  We hit the gym, swim, surf, have massages, eat the most amazing freshly-caught grilled fish and generally just hang out, enjoying each other’s company.  It’s bliss.
