Terry Tran is teaching others to invest and trade without taking unnecessary risks.

What’s your story?
Our family escaped communism Vietnam back in the late 70’s via boat with 300 hundred others bound for Australia but unfortunately our boat never made it as it started to sink. Fortunately we were saved by a cargo ship and shipped as human cargo to a nearby island off the coast of Malaysia and processed as refugees. My father unfortunately passed away at the refugee camp when a tree came down on our shelter while sleeping, so I was raised by my single mum with nothing but the clothing we had on and this is ultimately what drove me to become financially free by the age of 27 and look after my mother and family.

What excites you most about your industry?
Being able to give back to society by teaching others how to invest and trade without taking silly risks and still achieve 15-25% p.a returns without leverage. I show people exactly what I do and aim to save them financially, before they get caught in the ‘get rich quick’ trap.

What’s your connection to Asia?
Born in Vietnam and escaped in the late 70’s as a refugee migrant. I go back to Asia quite regularly.

Favourite city in Asia for business and why?
Singapore. Beautiful people, safe country, business and investment friendly, stable Government and of course the incredible food everywhere.

What’s the best piece of advice you ever received?
Focus and follow your passion, never the money. Money is the byproduct of doing what you love by serving to the best of your abilities.

Who inspires you?
Warren Buffett. Humble, down to earth, great teacher of investing as well as life principles.

What have you just learnt recently that blew you away?
The power of using specific social media techniques for influence, authority and marketing.

If you had your time again, what would you do differently?
Nothing because all my many mistakes are valuable lessons I needed to go through to make me become the better person I have become today.

How do you unwind?
I love swimming, and getting lost with a great movie and time with family and friends.

Favourite Asian destination for relaxation? Why?
Bali because of the serenity, the culture, the Balinese people, the activities like horse riding, bike riding, water rafting and the incredible resorts and food.

Everyone in business should read this book:
The Personal MBA, incredible practical lessons.
