Increase Wellbeing and Performance with Christine’s UpNow App

What’s your story?
I am an aeronautical engineer turned banker turned hypnotherapist. I founded the Renewed Edge Hypnotherapy Centre because I believe people need solution-focused tools to sharpen their edge on a regular basis. I also created a self-hypnosis app called UpNow to bring the benefits of hypnosis to everyone’s fingertips. How did that happen? I experienced first-hand the benefits of self-hypnosis as a fencer. I also witnessed the increased use of hypnosis in European hospitals and I delved into mind-blowing studies where research has increasingly shown the power of this technique for pain management, performance enhancement, relaxation, and much more. I also trained in NLP with Richard Bandler.

What excites you most about your industry?
There is a revolution brewing in the mental health industry. Compared to other sectors, it has barely evolved over the last 40 years. Now, we are seeing a flurry of self-help tools because of the growing toll of stress and modern diseases on our society. I believe that we are about to witness a renaissance in the mental health industry with the increased adoption of effective mental health tools within the next decade. One reason is the growing awareness of the mind and body connection. There is so much we need to do to address the growing mental health crisis. We need to reinvent our approach to mental health as a society.

What’s your connection to Asia?
I have been living here for more than 11 years and I have visited many places in Asia.

Favourite city in Asia for business and why?
Hong Kong! I like the energy and vibrancy of the City. It is unique.

What’s the best piece of advice you ever received?
Keep on learning. It has never been more true. Everything changes. Technology changes. The way we do business and live keeps changing. Covid-19 has turbocharged that trend. We can decide to make the most of any challenge.

Who inspires you?
Pioneers in space and aeronautics. We take airplane travel for granted but imagine people’s surprise when the Wright Brothers made a machine fly more than a century ago. These pioneers made their dreams come true through their passion and motivation. The thought of flying machines led to the birth and growth of the whole industry. Now we aim for the stars.

What have you just learnt recently that blew you away?
A study showed that our mindsets seem to have more influence than our DNA. Our mental expectations about ourselves play at least an equal, if not greater role, than our genes when it comes to our body’s response to exercise and diet. In other words, we should pay attention to what we believe. Thoughts affect our wellbeing, performance, and physical health.

If you had your time again, what would you do differently?
I would go faster.

How do you unwind?
My secret weapon is mindful self-hypnosis. It is my unique blend of breathing exercises, mindfulness, and self-hypnosis. It works wonders for me.

Favourite Asian destination for relaxation? Why?
Thailand. The people are kind, the customer service is top-notch, the food is delicious, and it is in close proximity to Hong Kong.

Everyone in business should read this book:
Factfulness: Ten Reasons We’re Wrong About the World — and Why Things Are Better Than You Think,” by Hans Rosling, et. alia. Applying critical thinking and being able to differentiate between facts and biases are paramount for any leader. Clarity of thought helps you devise better strategies.

Key Takeaway: The fashion industry relies on storytelling to create fashionable garments and spread positive messages about issues.
