Bentley Cheng

Bentley Cheng enjoys being a disrupter and has created a business where he can do that in the financial sector.

What’s your story?

I am the founder of FinStyle app and Infinite Digital Solutions.

Understanding the stigma that many Singaporeans have against the financial planning industry, I wanted to bridge the gap between digital literacy and the financial services industry through the use of a mobile application platform. As such, I created the FinStyle app with the purpose of providing users with access to their entire insurance and investment summary right at their fingertips.

What excites you most about your industry?

What excites me most about the financial services industry, is the endless opportunity to expand my knowledge and learn about the topics that are prevalent in the industry. In addition, being able to use my knowledge and help others achieve their financial freedom / goals allowing them to live their life to the fullest, is a rewarding experience every time.

What drives you in business to push beyond what other people consider normal?

I am someone who relishes in building something novel, better still if it is something that is an industry disruptor. Some people might find my ideas to be outlandish, or I might come across as someone who is too engrossed in an existing project. However, this is because I’ve lived by this Chinese mantra “要做就要做得最好,不然就不做”. This phrase means that we should always give our best, if we have no plans on doing so, it is better not even to start.

What have been the most useful skills you have learnt and applied in your journey?

Communication and teamwork are both very important skills in my line of work, especially when I am dealing with people 90% of the time. I prefer to work with 100% transparency alongside a team based on trust, as I believe no one person is perfect, and it takes a team to bring us closer to perfection if that is what we strive for.

What’s the best piece of advice you ever received?

Everything in life comes with a price tag which includes success. One would have to bear the weight of responsibility if building an empire is what he / she is working towards.

Who inspires you?

Both my parents are my role models, as I saw how it was through tenacity and persistence that my parents rebuilt their business and through their example, I strongly believe in the power of hard work and self-discipline, no matter the age.

What have you learnt recently that blew you away?

I wouldn’t say that it is a lesson that I have learnt recently but more of something that I am currently still learning. The inner peace of letting go of things beyond control and things that can’t be changed. Especially when running multiple businesses, many things go on daily that are beyond our control, and I am learning to take a step by and let nature take its course rather than stressing over things that can’t be changed.

If you had your time again, what would you do differently?

No, I would not do anything differently. I used to enjoy asking such questions as well until I met my fiancée, Shermine, who taught me the acceptance of one’s journey. We should always be grateful for the journey we have been through and look forward to our future as the journey of our past made us who we are today.

How do you unwind?

I relax by spending time with my fiancée or going to my parent’s place for dinner. Some of my other hobbies would include shopping, gym and karting, which would typically get my head off work temporarily, but nothing beats spending time with family.

What is a major mindset change, belief shift or ‘ah ha’ moment that you’ve experienced in relation to your business?

Embrace challenges. Challenges and tough times are really a recipe for growth. Each time I am struggling, I would constantly remind myself that I am getting closer to success and each tough day would mean an easier day tomorrow. However, the moment you give up, everything is gone, including all the challenges you have been through would become for nothing.

Everyone in business should read this book:

I believe this is unusual, I have read many finance-related books but one of my favourite books which I feel everyone should read is “Mob Rules: What the Mafia Can Teach the Legitimate Businessman”, something I read when I was in Secondary school.

It is similar to Sun Tze’s ‘Art of War’, however, set in a Western approach which one can relate to its life lessons within. Similar to what I believe in “想学做生意就得先学会做人”. One can only do business after learning the basic morals of humanity.
