Chew Pei Ying is an image consultant, helping people enhance their appearance to help improve behaviour, communications and boost confidence.
What’s your story?
I am the founder and principal image consultant of Inluminate Image Consultancy, a mother of 2 beautiful kids and a business owner of a wellness company. I came upon the opportunity to be an image consultant at a very low point in my life. Being an image consultant helps me to build my identity. It was a transformational journey for me to meet a better version of myself and I now want to transfer all these amazing experiences to others who need it.
My vision is to help more women discover and connect to themselves and be able to express themselves through ABC (appearance, behavior and communication).My principle is living beautifully, from inside out.
What excites you most about your industry?
Image consulting is an industry to help people cultivate and improve, enhance their appearance, behavior and communications skills. It is a great joy to see how people’s behavior changes just by enhancing their appearance. It is more than helping them to boost their confidence. We are helping clients to project their image. This image is congruent with their professional goals and roles so they can be at their best both on the inside and out.
What’s your connection to Asia?
I am a Malaysian, living in Singapore.
Favourite city in Asia for business and why?
Singapore. Singapore is situated in an ideal location. Singapore is situated in the heart of Southeast Asia, making it possible for a business to access a market of 2.8 billion people within a few hours flight.
I think the chance and opportunities to expand the business into neighboring countries is very good to seed business in Singapore.
What’s the best piece of advice you ever received?
You have only failed, if you have given up, until then, it is learning.
Be resilient. There is no failure if you don’t give up. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes because that is how we learn and progress. We can only feel the power and growth in our action.
I instill this value in my kid because I believe if they understand mistakes are a journey to excel they will be able to achieve anything they want in their life. Nothing will ever stop them.
Who inspires you?
Marie Forleo is a marketing and lifestyle expert and a bestselling author.
What have you just learnt recently that blew you away?
I am amazed by how powerful our unconscious mind is. Our subconscious mind not only controls all the processes of the body but also knows the answers to the various questions and can solve many problems. I have been learning various techniques recently to connect with our subconscious mind to our innate intelligence. It fascinates me.
If you had your time again, what would you do differently?
Don’t think and plan so much. Just do it. Learning is in the doing. I would like to take more action instead of spending time on hesitation and self-doubt.
But I also believe everything happens for a reason and there is no wrong path. Every journey is a learning experience that helps us to do better in our next page of life.
How do you unwind?
Spending quality time with my family. The laughter of the kids is my favourite therapy.
Favourite Asian destination for relaxation? Why?
Malaysia. It is a food paradise! It is a food lover’s paradise really. KL and Penang are the top spots for food lovers visiting Malaysia.
