The sad death of her mother made Mavis Lee realise that time is precious so she took the leap to start her own company providing brand promotion through social media.

What’s your story?
“Life is too short not to live a life deemed meaningful to us and FEEL ALIVE EVERYDAY”

That was the greatest takeaway from my mum’s battle with pancreatic cancer and her eventual departure in 2019. I made a promise to be her living legacy and decided to pursue all my dreams courageously.

With 6+ years of Design & Marketing experience in managing social media, I decided to start LadyDesignBoss.com to bring aliveness to my clients and their brands.

What excites you most about your industry?
What I love about my industry (Social Media Marketing) is its ever-changing nature – It’s so exciting because there are always new learning and opportunities for growth. Example: The latest feature, Instagram Live, is creating great opportunities for brands to stand out and swiping posts with bite-sized information are currently well-received too.

Remember, your social media feed is your virtual storefront!

What is your connection to Asia?
My parents ventured out of their humble hometown in Malaysia in their early 20s and came  to Singapore, hoping to forge a better future.

So I am blessed to have been born and raised in sunny Singapore, surrounded by diverse cultures. It’s amazing being able to celebrate all the festive seasons of Chinese, Malay and Indian people with my loved ones!

Favourite city in Asia for business and why?
I built my business in a way which enables me to work from anywhere. I love to travel and work at the same time and enjoy a wide variety of countries.

My goal is to build up my superwomen virtual team in Southeast Asia so I will say the cities in Southeast Asia!

What’s the best piece of advice you ever received?
“You need to focus on how this can earn you money – and remember you earn money by helping people to achieve certain kinds of results.”

This is one of the best pieces of business advice I have received. It came from my partner who is a thriving entrepreneur.

For several years, I have been an adopter of “Follow your passion and money will come.” and it did not work out well for me. I have learnt the hard way that when there is no money, we cannot sustain whatever we love to do. We need money to drive our passion and dreams.

Through his advice, we brainstormed and worked on building a sustainable business model for LadyDesignBoss.com. Now I am able to use the money to fuel more dreams!

Who inspires you?

My mum. Her courageous and cheerful self while she battled with pancreatic cancer was inspiring. As a result I decided to practise resilience and gratitude daily which has led me to deal with disappointments and obstacles powerfully in business today.

What have you just learnt recently that blew you away?
I learnt that someone grew his account to 150k followers after doing Instagram Live everyday for four months! Wow…the power of new changes in social media when leveraged on, that’s why I say it’s exciting!

An audience will grow for two reasons:

Firstly, as they listen to you and receive value, they will start to like you.

Secondly, Instagram loves it when you use their new features and they start to send more audience to you.

If you had your time again, what would you do differently?
I would tell my younger self to practice being alive and present to our loved ones, even after a tiring day at work. Never neglect quality time together, for our loved ones are the reasons why we work so hard in the first place.

How do you unwind?
I love to take a relaxing stroll by the beach and admire the sunset with my partner, it always reminds me of how beautiful life is! Tons of laughter and quality time with my loved ones keep my heart full too. 🙂

Favourite Asian destination for relaxation? Why?
Absolutely Taiwan! It’s the Asian country I have travelled to most and it holds many unforgettable memories with my loved ones. I love the warm hospitality, beautiful oceans, magnificent mountains and cooling weather (not summer).

Imagine waking up at the oceanside with a cooling breeze and warm smiles greeting you at reception every morning. Those were the days at Hualien, Taiwan. As I reminisce I miss it so much!

Everyone in business should read this book:
High Performance Habits by Brendon Burchard is a MUST read for anyone who wants to create ever increasing levels of both well-being and external success over the long term.

Practicing the six habits in the book has changed my life – It helps to build me up, which in turn builds my business.
